With the Fourth of July fresh in our minds, it is always easy to recall history’s successes, its triumphs, and celebrations. Tougher to recall are the dangers, the trials, and the tribulations. In the summer of 1944, the United States and its allies undertook a tremendous risk, and placed thousands of men in harm’s way for what was a carefully calculated gamble.
The burden of responsibility was assumed by General Dwight Eisenhower, and his legacy as an effective leader was forged through the fires of war. Each day, leaders around the world are asked to do the same, and time and again, nothing less than excellence is expected of them. Only history will decide if they will live up to the examples set by General Eisenhower and others.
